The Dorchester Historical Society (DHS) was organized in 1891 to preserve this community's history. And there is much history worth celebrating in this the largest and oldest neighborhood in Boston, Mass. Dorchester dates from 1630 and still has vestiges of its farming past visible if one knows where to look in this bustling, dense urban setting. Examples are three DHS-owned buildings - the ca. 1648 Blake House (oldest in the city of Boston) on Columbia Road and Massachusetts Avenue and the 1767 Captain Lemuel Clap House and 1806 William Clapp House nearby on Boston Street. The DHS is active in innovative initiatives that increase the awareness of Dorchester’s history for residents and visitors alike.
%newline%DHS is an all-volunteer organization that is reaching beyond local boundaries to establish productive partnerships and bring in a wider audience. We now need help in making Dorchester's history available to more, through a docent training program. (more)
