Feed Hungry Bodies & Spirits @ The Long Island Shelter FarmMonday, August 17, 2009 - Wednesday, November 25, 2009Tis' the Season to start planting organic produce to help feed hungry bodies and spirits at The Farm at Boston's Long Island Shelter. The Farm at Boston's Long Island Shelter is an organic vegetable and herb farm located on Long Island in Boston Harbor. The Farm helps feed hungry bodies, minds and spirits by producing over 30,000 pounds of high quality, first harvest produce for the homeless individuals we serve, and by providing hands-on job training, work-readiness skills, life skills and education for homeless individuals as part of the Serving Ourselves Job Training Program. The Farm needs volunteers from April to December to assist with everything from planting to harvesting. The Farm can accommodate individuals and groups and is a great opportunity for your company's Community Service Day or for your school to get involved.
Warm Hands Warm Hearts Winter Apparel DriveTuesday, November 10, 2009 - Tuesday, March 23, 2010The winter months are the most difficult time of year for the homeless. Many are at risk to the elements. You can help keep people safe and warm this winter by joining our Warm Hands Warm Hearts Campaign. To participate, all you need do is donate at least one brand-new winter hat, scarf, pair of gloves or mittens, warm socks or underwear. It is an easy and inexpensive way to make a lasting impact for the homeless in our community! You can conduct a drive right at your place of business, gathering or worship. We can provide you flyers to notify co-workers, classmates or colleagues. All you need to do is provide a place for participants to drop off their donations. By participating you not only help keep our community's neediest, most vulnerable citizens warm and safe this winter, but you also help maintain their dignity and comfort during this most difficult time of year. To participate, call (617) 534-2526, ext. 383 or email mariannbucina@fobh.org
Operation Sock DropTuesday, November 10, 2009 - Wednesday, September 22, 2010Each morning we put on a clean pair of socks with hardly a thought. But for our community's homeless men and women this is often a luxury. By participating in Operation Sock Drop you not only help keep our community's neediest, most vulnerable citizens safe, warm and healthy, but you also help maintain their dignity during this most difficult time: an attribute crucial to a successful move beyond homelessness. You can organize the drive at your work, school, place of worship, community organization, or even with friends, family and neighbors. To participate, all you and your co-workers, school mates, colleagues and friends need do is donate at least one new pair of men's or women's socks, pair of underwear or undershirt (men's XL and 2XL are always needed). Its an easy and inexpensive way to make a big impact on the comfort, health, safety and dignity of our community's homeless. For more information on Operation Sock Drop, please call Mariann Bucina at (617) 534-2526, ext. 383 or email at mariannbucina@fobh.org.
