Construction Training ProgramThe Construction Training Program challenges Boston’s unemployed/underemployed and unskilled young people ages 18-24 to refocus their lives through job training and academic accreditation (GED or high school diploma.) The skills and construction training curriculum includes OSHA certification, rough and finish carpentry skills, and electives such as locksmithing and carpentry preservation provided by The North Bennett Street School. Students also participate in life skills workshops that include problem solving, conflict resolution, public health issues, budgeting and goal setting. Job development, career exploration and job placement are other components integral to the program.
Project AdvantageProject Advantage (PA) is YouthBuild Boston’s alternative education and workforce development program for young people, ages 16-18, offering academic and vocational training through hands-on exploration of the Green Industry. A traditional, four-year high school education is not for everyone. PA fills a void for students who don’t thrive in a mainstream classroom, and who may be interested in a career in the Green Industry. Students work to earn their GED while learning valuable job skills. Our curriculum integrates high school level academics with hands-on instruction in landscaping, carpentry, entrepreneurship, life skills and professional development. Students study ecological diversity, aesthetic values, functionality and the benefit these principles bring to each site and the community. Upon graduation from the program, students work with our staff to secure employment or enroll in post-secondary education or training/apprenticeships.
The DesigneryThe Designery is an intensive program that engages high school students with experienced architectural designers in addressing the needs of an under-served community. The Designery collaborates with private and nonprofit entities to develop a nontraditional program that empowers young people with the skills and opportunities necessary to succeed in academically, socially, and in careers. Participants gain an understanding of the forces that shape their environment, and are encouraged to become its stewards by honing their leadership and workplace skills through hands-on learning with a wide range of professionals including those from local architecture firms and universities. Participants identify community structures in need of repair, and followed by extensive research, proceed to improve it through a collaborative design/build process. Post construction, the team returns to evaluate the project's performance using qualitative and quantitative research methods.
Neighborhood Technology Training ProgramNeighborhood Technology Training Program (NTTP) provides low-cost computer sales and repair to the community and it provides technology training to middle and high school students. Students learn to refurbish donated computers, which are then sold to individuals, families, and community agencies. NTTP has made available more than 1,500 refurbished computers to neighborhood residents. All YouthBuild Boston graduates receive a computer upon successful completion of their programs.

Each collaborative project is designed to deliver the greatest value for each dollar given, and each hour volunteered. YBB will work with you to find a local organization or cause that will be the focus of your UBuild Service Partnership, or you may suggest an agency of your preference. We will provide all planning, prep work, and materials for the project. Mud and rain can't stop volunteersThe empty space behind Children’s Services of Roxbury (CSR) was a dismal picture. It consisted of a rocky, fenced yard with a small, plastic play structure. Each day, more than one hundred children used the space as a playground. They played games and dreamed big. But the yard’s bleak character was far from a suitable backdrop for sparking young imaginations. Roxbury nonprofit, YouthBuild Boston (YBB), partnered with CB Richard Ellis (CBRE), NELSON Strategies, and Bank of America, to transform the rocky lot into an inspiring, green place to play and grow. Volunteers from each organization worked together to make it happen. Despite 1” to 2” of rain and cold temperatures, trainees from YouthBuild Boston along with more than 35 volunteers began work at 9:00 am on Friday to replace a mud filled lot with a playground.

YBB trainees push green envelopeBy Pete Stidman, News Editor, Dorchester Reporter ------- Call it another rung on the ladder toward an environmentally sustainable Boston, or perhaps, another tug on the rope that will bring that lofty goal down to earth. YouthBuild Boston, an organization that has taught values through construction work since their inception in the basement of Roxbury's First Unitarian Church in 1990, is taking the city's advances in green building and pushing them further. At 26 Arbutus St. in Dorchester they are building one of the Department of Neighborhood Development's prototype two-family designs, but beefing up the particulars to reach LEED Platinum, green-building's most coveted certification.
